NBL Round 10: Giants lose to Airs

Top ranked Giants (8-4) recorded its fourth loss in Stoke on Saturday night. Hosts were defeated by Airs (0-0) 85-75. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Giants. They outrebounded Giants 49-33 including a 38-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. The game was dominated by American players. Swingman Shaun Willett (193-1996, college: Queens, NC) fired a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Forward Javonte Douglas (203-1992, college: Montevallo) chipped in 7 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Forward Sam Thompson (200-1992, college: Ohio St.) produced 25 points for lost side. Airs maintains th position with 0-0 record. Giants at the other side dropped to the second place with four games lost. Airs are looking forward to face Bulls (#5) in Pukekohe in the next round where they are favorite. Giants will play at home against Sharks and are hoping to prove to their fans that the loss was just an accident.
Important game to mention about took place in Palmerston North. Ninth ranked Jets (5-7) saved a 3-point victory at home edging much higher ranked Hawks (7-5) 90-87 on Tuesday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of Jordanian-American center John Bohannon (211-1991, college: UTEP) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 11 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 blocks. Robert Crawford contributed with 25 points for the winners. Jets' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The former international forward Jordan Hunt (205-1997, college: S.Oregon) replied with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for Hawks. Jets moved-up to eighth place. Hawks at the other side dropped to the third position with five games lost. They share it with Mountainairs. Jets will play against higher ranked Bulls (#5) in Pukekohe in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Hawks will play at home against Nuggets and hope to get back on the winning track.
9th ranked Saints (4-8) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 111-105 loss to top-ranked Airs (0-0) in Wellington on Sunday evening. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. Anthony Hilliard scored 41 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. At the losing side Xavier Cooks responded with 32 points and 9 rebounds. Airs maintains th position with 0-0 record. Defending champion Saints keep the ninth place with eight games lost. Airs will meet at home Bulls (#5) in the next round where they are favorite. Saints will play against Nuggets (#6) and hope to secure a win.

Rest of the games of round 10 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Tuatara defeated Sharks in Auckland 89-77. Bulls beat Rams at home 86-76. Tuatara destroyed Nuggets on the opponent's court 105-74.



Jets - Hawks 90-87

Important game to mention about took place in Palmerston North. Ninth ranked Jets (5-7) saved a 3-point victory at home edging much higher ranked Hawks (7-5) 90-87 on Tuesday evening. Jets players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. They brought some defensive toughness making 10 blocks. Worth to mention a great performance of Jordanian-American center John Bohannon (211-1991, college: UTEP) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 11 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 blocks. American forward Robert Crawford (198-1990, college: Cent Arkansas) contributed with 25 points for the winners. Four Jets players scored in double figures. Jets' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The former international forward Jordan Hunt (205-1997, college: S.Oregon) replied with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and forward Quintin Bailey (201-1997, college: John Brown) added 20 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Hawks. Jets moved-up to eighth place. Hawks at the other side dropped to the third position with five games lost. They share it with Mountainairs. Jets will play against higher ranked Bulls (#5) in Pukekohe in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Hawks will play at home against Nuggets and hope to get back on the winning track.

There was no surprise in Southland where 10th ranked Sharks (3-9) were defeated by second ranked Huskies (9-5) 89-77 on Friday. Huskies outrebounded Sharks 43-30 including a 37-25 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American guard Siler Schneider (191-1995, college: UC Davis, agency: One Motive Sports) scored 28 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and the former international forward Robert Loe (211-1991, college: St.Louis) chipped in 17 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. Schneider is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the losing side American guard Daishon Knight (185-1991, college: Illinois St., agency: BIG) responded with 26 points and 5 assists and his fellow American import forward Winston Shepard (203-1993, college: SDSU, agency: Slash Sports) scored 8 points and 12 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Sharks' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Huskies keep a position of league leader. Loser Sharks stay at the bottom place with nine games lost. Huskies will meet at home Rams (#7) in the next round where they are favorite. Sharks will play against the league's second-placed Giants in Stoke and hope to secure a win.

Bulls - Rams 86-76

We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams in Pukekohe where seventh ranked Bulls (6-5) defeated 6th ranked Rams (6-7) 86-76 on Saturday. Forward Isaac Davidson (201-1997, college: Sonoma St.) scored 22 points and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and the former international forward Leon Henry (200-1985, college: S.Idaho JC, agency: BIG) chipped in 9 points and 18 rebounds during the contest. Bulls' coach used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side American Matthew Moyer (203-1997, college: GWU) responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 14 rebounds and the former international center Mike Karena (208-1993, college: Wright St.) scored 19 points and 7 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Bulls moved-up to fifth place. Loser Rams dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. Bulls will meet Jets (#8) in the next round. Rams will play against the league's leader Huskies in Auckland and hope to secure a win.

Rather expected game in Dunedin where 5th ranked Nuggets (6-6) were rolled over by second ranked Huskies (9-5) 105-74 on Sunday. Huskies outrebounded Nuggets 51-35 including 36 on the defensive glass. American guard Siler Schneider (191-1995, college: UC Davis, agency: One Motive Sports) scored 21 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the charge for the winners and guard Dontae Nance (190-2005) chipped in 21 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists during the contest. Schneider is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the losing side American guard Tray Boyd III (193-1998, college: ETSU) responded with 19 points and 4 steals and the former international power forward Samuel Timmins (211-1997, college: Washington) scored 12 points and 7 rebounds. Five Huskies and four Nuggets players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Huskies keep a position of league leader. Loser Nuggets dropped to the sixth place with six games lost. Huskies will meet at home Rams (#7) in the next round where they are favorite. Nuggets will play against Hawks in Tamatea and hope to secure a win.

But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. Airs had a 28-17 advantage in offensive rebounds.
